Viareggio is a city and a comune in northern Tuscany, Italy. The 32-sq km city is home to a population of about 75,000.

Viareggio has a long history. Since 900 BC, it has been widely recognized in Europe as a shining pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea. In 1820, Viareggio was the granted the status of "city". In 1822, when Italy was invaded by Napoleon, his sister Pauline Bonaparte, once built a country house here, where she stayed for the rest of her life.

Viareggio is a leading producer of luxury yachts, which is also an important powerhouse for the local economy. Other economic pillars include floriculture and fishing. As a world famous tourist destination, the city also has a marine park and a lake park.

Viareggio is also a significant cultural city in Italy which is recognized globally, with many prominent cultural events hosted here. The annual Carnival of Viareggio is the most important traditional festival of the city, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world. It is considered as one of the most important carnivals in Europe. Other well known festivals include Festival Puccini, EuropaCinema and Premio letterario Viareggio Repaci.
