The city of South El Monte, 34¡ã02¨•north latitude and 118¡ã02¨•west longitude, is located 11 miles east of Los Angeles on the west coast of the US. At an elevation of 250 meters, the city covers an area of 60 sq km, with its annual temperature and rainfall respectivley averaging 77.6¡ãF and 390 mm. Incorporated into a city in 1958, today's South El Monte is home to 22,700 people, 75% of who are of Hispanic descent. Backed by more than 1,800 businesses, the city has a strong economy mainly driven by industry and commerce, reporting USD 22,937 in per-capital annual income.
The city is easily accessible with a well-developed transportation network, including three highways traversing the city. A 30-minute southward drive leads to one of the world's largest international ports¡ªthe Port of Long Beach; a 30-minute westward drive leads to one of the busiest international airports in the world¡ªLos Angeles International Airport; a 20-minute northward drive leads to the city center of Los Angeles, where there are many cultural destinations, including Universal Studios Hollywood and Disneyland Resort; a 3-hour eastward drive leads to one of the most glamorous cities¡ªLas Vegas.
